Highrise Chess: from first principles to tournament prep. Lessons that help you think, not just memorize.
Chess mastery comes from hard work, perseverance, and a genuine love for the game. My goal is to help you see the board more clearly and play with confidence.

I am a 2100+ rated chess player with over ten years of experience teaching chess to students of all ages, from young beginners to serious adult improvers. I have won multiple blitz and rapid tournaments, and I have defeated titled players both over the board and online. My coaching experience includes one-on-one instruction with children, teens, and adults, helping beginners learn the fundamentals and more advanced students improve their rating, prepare for tournaments, and break through plateaus.
My teaching philosophy focuses on understanding core chess concepts rather than memorizing hundreds of lines of theory. Many students spend years trying to memorize openings without knowing why moves work. I teach the principles of openings, middlegame strategy, and endgames so students can think for themselves, reduce blunders, and improve much faster while saving hundreds—often thousands—of hours of inefficient study. This approach is especially effective for beginners, scholastic players, and adults who want lasting improvement.
Each student receives a personalized study plan tailored to their goals, whether that is learning chess from scratch, building strong fundamentals, improving online ratings, or preparing for tournaments. I update this plan during the week based on lesson progress. Students also receive access to my personal library of chess resources, including curated courses, instructional content I’ve created, and concept-based quizzes covering openings, middlegames, and endgames from beginner through advanced levels.
Outside of lessons, I provide ongoing support. Students can ask chess-related questions between sessions at no additional cost and join a private Discord community to learn alongside other students of similar level. I also organize online tournaments so students can practice competitively in a structured environment. I offer a free first lesson so we can assess your level, identify priorities, and build a clear plan for improvement.
Building real understanding, not just memorization. Results that last.

We started chess lessons with Hyrum and saw immediate progress from the very first lesson. He explains chess concepts clearly and focuses on understanding ideas instead of memorizing moves, which made a big difference. The lessons are well structured and tailored to the student’s level. He helped build strong fundamentals and showed how to think through positions more confidently during games. Hyrum is patient, organized, and great at working with both kids and adults. We would highly recommend him to beginners or anyone looking to improve their chess or prepare for tournaments.
What sets Hyrum apart is their post-game analysis. They don't just show you where you blundered; they explain the 'why' behind the move and help you fix the underlying thought process. They’ve helped me move past plateauing by teaching me how to control the tempo of the board. An absolute asset to any chess player's journey.
Hyrum developed a custom lesson plan tailored to fit my needs and spends each lesson reviewing it and updating it as certain goals are met. He is very good at providing explanations for why certain principles are good to follow in chess and is a very flexible and understanding mentor.
Hyrum is very enjoyable to work with. He’s a very accomplished player, and has such a solid grasp on Chess. He has great board vision and does well at translating the concepts to his students. I really appreciated the “curriculum” approach, and I felt like I knew what I needed to do next after training. He’s also extremely accessible and responsive. I highly recommend Hyrum if you are looking to up your game.
I've been mentored by Hyrum for over a year, and have just had my first lesson through Wyzant. I started off last year as a 400 ELO and in that time I have jumped to 1200 ELO!! Its been so AWESOME! He's not just a chess wiz, but also such a great tutor. He showed me how to find different tactics, and taught in a way that I was able to pick it up really quickly. Will definitely continue to take lessons and am so excited to see my progress in another year!
Hyrum is an outstanding chess tutor! His deep understanding of tactics and keen eye for spotting my blunders has been invaluable. His personalized approach made lessons engaging and highly effective. If you're looking to genuinely improve your game, I highly recommend Hyrum
